Lloyd is a 17-year-old composer, clarinettist and conductor, from Bridgend in South Wales. He is currently studying at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester, with Jeremy Pike and Gavin Wayte (composition) and Jo Patton (clarinet).
In recent years he has received a number of awards for his compositions, including a 'Highly Commended' prize in the prestigious BBC Proms Young Composers' Competition for three years in a row, from 2007. As a result of this, his winning entries have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3, on programmes such as the Breakfast Show with Rob Cowan. Other competition successes for Lloyd include prizes in Hampstead and Highgate and the EPTA UK Young Composers' competitions. In 2008, his "Fanfare for Sadler's Wells" was performed at the "Excellent!" event organised to celebrate the achievements of the Music and Dance Scheme (at Sadler's Wells theatre in London), with Lloyd conducting.
In 2008, Lloyd was commissioned to write a signature piece for The Amber Trust, in the form of a wind quintet. The New London Chamber Ensemble recorded and performed the resulting "Amber Scherzo". Soon after this Lloyd was asked by the Beenham Band of Berkshire to write a new piece for the occasion of their 10th anniversary, and the subsequent "Jubilation" was premiered in June 2009 at Newbury's Corn Exchange. His new String Quartet will be performed by the Ren Quartet of Chetham's School in the Royal Northern College of Music's 2010 Chamber Music Festival.
Lloyd's next major project is to write a piece for the Chetham's Symphony Orchestra, for performance in Ischia (Italy), in July 2010. He has also been commissioned to write an orchestral piece by Disability Arts Wales, which will be performed in 2012 to coincide with the London Olympics. Lloyd is working on this three-year project with UCAN Productions, a Cardiff-based organisation who provide young visually-impaired people with the opportunity to perform in the arts. Lloyd is visually and hearing impaired himself, and has been the Junior Chairman of UCAN since 2005.
When he is not composing, conducting or representing UCAN, Lloyd enjoys performing with the clarinet as his instrument. He was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain in 2008 and 2009, and he continues to play with the Chetham's Symphony Orchestra in his last year at Chets. Through these ensembles, he has had the opportunity to play under many renowned conductors, such as Sir Mark Elder, Semyon Bychkov and Vasily Petrenko, at major concert venues across the U.K. including the Barbican (London), the Royal Albert Hall (London), the Bridgewater Hall (Manchester) and the Sage (Gateshead).
His music making has also taken him further afield - in 2007 to Uganda and in 2009 to Trinidad and Tobago. Both of these visits were focused around a series of cultural exchanges and workshops with musicians from around the globe, brought together by "The Commonwealth Resounds!" project.
Lloyd is grateful to the Blackpool Symphony Orchestra for inviting him to perform Weber's Second Clarinet Concerto with them in February.
